IT CAREER EXPO - COMPETITION DETAILS
There are two COMPETITIONS at this year's IT Expo:
RESUME/MOCK JOB INTERVIEW
This is an individual student competition that is available high school students. Competition participants must be registered to attend the IT Expo by Tuesday, October 28, 2008.
Students can apply for one of the following IT related jobs: PC Support and Repair Specialist, Webmaster, System/Network Administrator and Software Engineer.
They need to declare in their resume objective what position they are applying for.
Students will need to email their PDF resumes to resumes@studentcareerconnection.org by Friday, October 31, 2008.
The resumes will be reviewed by participating business partners and the top 20 resumes will be determined. These 20 students will be notified and scheduled for a job interview time slot during the IT Expo. Selected business partners will interview the students and the winning student will be awarded a $100 gift card to Best Buy in Council Bluffs at the end of the Expo.
Each student interview will be a maximum of 10 minutes. Students will be judged by a panel of business partners on their resume, personal presentation and how well they answer questions during the interview.
TEAM VIDEO CREATION COMPETITION
Participating AREA 13 High Schools are invited to take part in our team video competition.
A team must create a 3-5 minute video that answers the question, "How is my school using technology?"
The competition takes place between October 15 - 31, 2008 (the competition ends Midnight, Friday, October 31, 2008). This competition time frame is intentionally planned to take 17 days (13 school days). Each school is being notified at the same time and videos submitted after the deadline will not be part of the competition.
Each participating high school must have four students on their video team. Participating students must be registered to attend the IT Expo by October 28, 2008.
The team can be any combination of sophomores, juniors or seniors as determined by the high school.
A teacher can participate in the project by teaching, critiquing and guiding the students in the video process.
Below are questions that can be used to guide your video content creation process. These are just suggestions and students are not limited to them.
1. What type of personal computers does the school use (PC or MAC)?
2. What are the OS's (operating system) of the computers?
3. What type of server (s) does the school have?
4. What are the primary software applications used in the school both by students and faculty/staff?
5. What type of backup solutions are in place?
6. How many users are on the school LAN (local area network)?
7. What type of email solution is the school using (POP, IMAP, Web-based)
8. What type of IT support does the school have (local, outsourced, web-based)?
9. What type of Internet Connection (dial-up, DSL, T1)?
10. What type of web site does the school have? How is it managed? Who manages it?
11. What are the strengths and weaknesses of the web site?
12. What type of video services does the school use? Can you web cast events?
13. Can you do video conferencing?
14. How is technology used to communicate, collaborate and connect teachers, students and parents?
15. How is the school calendar presented to web users?
16. How does the school use video and media?
17. What type of anti-virus solutions does the school use?
18. What type of peripherals (scanners, cameras, printers, etc.) does the school use?
19. From a student's perspective, how could the school improve their use of technology?
20. How could my school better integrate technology into the classroom?

The final video must be in the AVI format.
Winners will be decided by selected business partners participating in the IT Expo.
Videos will be judged on originality, creativity, quality and on how well the following question is answered, "How is my school using technology?"
Only one high school can win. The winning high school team will be awarded one $100 Best Buy Gift Card per team member. Teachers are not eligible to win.

Any videos entered in the competition must not be defamatory, obscene, illegal, infringe any third party intellectual property rights, or otherwise negatively reflect upon the high school, College Career Academies, AEA13, Student Career Connection or Iowa Western Community College.
