Students Talk About 2008 CCA IT Job Shadows

High school students from across the Area 13 region were able to learn practical skills during their recent job shadows with area businesses during April and May of 2008. Google participated in virtual job shadows where students learned Google's core web applications. The Geek Squad helped students learn how to configure a wireless router. CyaNet Sports showed students how to create a video podcast. DARMEDIA helped students learn how to prepare, process and present images for use on a web site. Here's what some of the participating students had to say about their experiences:

Mark - Lewis Central "I thought my job shadow was a very good experience for me as a high school student. It showed me the options that a high school student has open to them that pertains to their area and school. I really appreciated what I found out I could do."

Michael - Griswold "The best thing about my job shadow is that it was very hands on. I have heard people talk about job shadowing and they say it can be boring. This job shadow had us working and not just sitting around watching. It kept me interested and taught me a lot."

Matt - Glenwood "My job shadow was really fun!"

Nick - Lewis Central "We learned the Google core web applications and how to manipulate them at will. The guys from Google were really cool, and answered a lot of my questions."

Connor - Harlan "The best thing I liked about my job shadow was the hands on approach."

Zach - Lewis Central "It is good to get the hands on experience you get in a job shadow. It is definitely more fun and you learn more in a job shadow as opposed to just memorizing things from a book."

Jasmine - Farragut "It helped to understand the importance of technology in the daily lives of people. Geek Squad helps everyday people with multiple questions they have about technology and it also helped me realize how much modern day society counts on it."

Troy - Lewis Central "I felt that this shadow helped me very much with understanding the route I am going to take in high school and college."

Colton - Boyer Valley "The best thing about my job shadow is that I learned more about computers than I probably would have if I didn't come to the job shadow."

Michael - Glenwood "The best thing I liked about my job shadow was talking to the Googlers and hearing about their day-to-day activities."

Patrick - Lewis Central "My job shadow broadened my view on computer repair, sales, and assistance so if I go into the computer aid field I'll be glad I shadowed at the Geek Squad."

Brandon - Griswold "My job shadow taught me about possible jobs in the IT field and made me consider the possibility of ongoing training and experience in this field of work."

Russell - Farragut "I learned all about what CyaNet sports does for the community and also how to edit and make videos and podcasts. The hosts were very entertaining, and fun to be around. I enjoyed myself and learned new stuff at the same time."

Derek - Fremont-Mills "I really enjoyed this job shadow experience because I really learned a lot about Google and what it takes to work for Google."

Rezza - Shenandoah "This job shadow taught me a lot about what goes on here on a daily basis and how to handle given situations here. I learned how to over clock a '98 Dell. It really helped me get a perspective on what a job in the tech help field is like. I'm now much more interested."

Zach - Griswold "I learned a ton of information in a short amount of time. Mr. Brown went slow enough for me to understand what I was doing. The whole time was hands on work which I loved a lot."

Tym - Fremont-Mills "This job shadow was great because I got to learn from a professional in the field of web design. Not only did we learn web design and graphic design techniques, but we learned the communications aspect of the business as well."
