Students Talk About 2008 Health Science Career Expo
The following comments are from students who attended the Health Science Career Expo that was held at the Mid America Center in Council Bluffs, IA on December 3, 2008.

Here's what some of the participating students had to say about their experiences:
Nekell - Missouri Valley "Its very valuable to me because I learned alot about the colleges and the classes I need to take as a high school student and also the classes certain colleges provide to help you find which one best fits you."
Courtney - Shenandoah "I learned that it's okay to be undecided about your major. I found many careers I would like to learn more about and pursue. I also learned a lot more about the colleges in the area that I can attend."
Lacey - Abraham Lincoln "I learned a lot about choosing a career in health. It was very helpful learning about different colleges and what they have to offer, I also liked how they told us the kinds of things I should be working on while I am still in high school."
Nick - Missouri Valley "I felt that the expo helped me know what kind of things are required to make it in the Health Field"

Sydney - Rolling Hills College Career Academies "The Expo was a great way to make health care students aware of the many possibilities available. I learned that there will always be a position available in the health care field no matter what city you live in."
Cheyanne - Missouri Valley "I think that the health science expo was very interesting, learned a lot about different colleges and scholarships."
Lacey - Abraham Lincoln "I learned a lot about choosing a career in health. It was very helpful learning about different colleges and what they have to offer, I also liked how they told us the kinds of things I should be working on while I am still in high school."
Ericka - Missouri Valley "I learned that Creighton is affordable and I can look at that school, I also learned a lot about Kaplan and Metro if I wanted to go part-time to college for a while. and I'm really looking forward to what Iowa Western is coming up with! It sounds so exciting!!! UNO also looks very interesting."
Kelsey - Missouri Valley "I really did learn a lot of valuable information at the Health Science Expo. I was very unsure about what type of college I wanted to go to and where and how many types I should apply to different colleges. It helped to learn about what colleges in the area had to offer and what it takes to get to these colleges, be successful, and go on to do what I would like to do in the future."
Devin - Tri-Center "The Health Science Expo was a great experience and helps you make connections to people who have already become very successful. I learned more about preparing for your college major in high school. I found that to be even more relevant to me than some on the Health Science field presentations."
Kaylee - Missouri Valley "I learned more about the schools I am interested in and that was very helpful for me. I also did the mock job interview and that taught me a lot."
David - Thomas Jefferson "This expo helped me to see what other colleges have to offer for me and it also opened my eyes to another career option."
Allie - Missouri Valley "I learned that there are many different careers in health. You can be anything from a housekeeper to a Doctor. I also learned that you can go to one school then transfer to a university. I liked that American Medical Response was there as well."
Courtney - Thomas Jefferson "It was a great experience because it showed me some more careers that I could go into. It also showed me some colleges I could see."
David - Thomas Jefferson "This expo helped me to see what other colleges have to offer for me and it also opened my eyes to another career option."
Kayla - Abraham Lincoln "I learned what job opportunities are available to me as well as what it takes to become a nurse, a doctor, a surgeon, etc. I think the Health Expo was a great experience for me as well as any other person who is interested in health care."
Amber - Kanesville "There are many different openings in the health career field. I learned that there are many different career opportunities, and there are many different colleges and majors to choose from."
Crystal - Abraham Lincoln "I learned about all of the schools I could go to to get the education I need. It was very helpful."

Sara - Abraham Lincoln "The health science expo gave me the opportunity to hear many important people talk about their careers and how they related to the health care field and also showed me many college options that I had not yet considered and that was very exciting to me and I really enjoyed that a lot. All in all it was a great experience once again and I am very happy with how it turned out."
Melissa - Tucker Center "This expo experience gave me some information on the college that I will be attending, it also gave me information on classes that are required to take. I learned that a lot of other people are undecided on there career and what they want to become themselves."

Shelby - Lewis Central "I learned that there are multiple jobs in the health field right here in Iowa. I also learned what is needed to get into each college that was represented at the health field. Taking certain classes and taking advantage of those college classes in high school. "
Jessika - Abraham Lincoln "I learned that the colleges are working more with students and their schedule. They are becoming larger and better to increase the number of students but still have small classes."
Ada - Thomas Jefferson "I thought that this Expo was very informational about all the different collages around the Council Bluffs and Omaha area."
Trevin - Thomas Jefferson "This expo was very good and the information provided was great. I learned a lot about different colleges and what they had to offer for health care profession classes."
Kylie - Abraham Lincoln "I really enjoyed going to this it helped me out a lot. I have decided to go to either a Clarkson or Iowa Western. There are many different paths to the health careers and this was very good for me"
Kendra - Abraham Lincoln "I liked the Expo because it helped me know more about the health care field as a whole. I now think that I would like to go on to be a Nurse Practitioner, not just a BSN."
Kaysha - Harlan "This opened my eyes to different career opportunities along with different ways to get schooling paid for."
Jason - Abraham Lincoln "During this health science expo I did learn some things that I believe may help me in my future plans to pursue a career in the health field. I must say that the overall value for me was not the best because I felt that the colleges were there more to show other aspects of their college rather than the specific health fields that they have majors for. Other than that small problem I feel it was an OK experience for me."

Cassie - Riverside "Overall, I gained and learned a lot. I heard some very useful information. I learned what all of the colleges, university's and businesses had to say. It was all very interesting."
Brittney - Abraham Lincoln "I learned that most colleges are trying to work around your schedule. I also learned that the classes are becoming smaller so that people can learn more and get more out of the experience."

Becca - St. Albert "Attending the Health Science Expo I thought it was more informational for first year students to HOSA. As a second year student I have I already heard what most of the college representatives had to say. I did like when the speakers from Alegent come to talk about what they needed in the hospital and what they look for in incoming nursing students or prospective employees."
Amanda - Harlan "It was nice to hear the people talk about college and what we need to do to get ready for it."
Julisa - Glenwood "This Health Science Expo experience was a great time for me to learn more about the health care profession. Not only did I learn more about the medical field but more about different careers in the health field. The speakers did a very nice job on presenting information to us and not making it boring."

Brittany - Logan-Magnolia "I thought this Expo was helpful to me because I got to receive more information from different colleges about what they have to offer. I also got to learn more about what classes I need to take. How much each college cost and other information concerning my field of choice."
Jessica - Missouri Valley "This experience was of value to me because I got to learn about a lot of different colleges that offered the major that I am interested in and about other careers that I didn't know much about."
Savannah - Abraham Lincoln "The Health Science Expo allowed me to communicate with businesses and colleges in the area to see if my interests could be applied to the real world. It also allowed me to use my interview skills and participate in the mock interviews."
Jamie - Thomas Jefferson "The value of the Health Science Expo experience helped me understand how hard and difficult getting into a school of nursing is going to be because of the competition, and it was great to know what schools offer what, and which majors they offer that I would like."
Rebeka - East Mills "I liked how I got to learn about what all of the people did who came and talked to us about their work and their personal experiences."
Craig - Thomas Jefferson "I really liked going to this expo because I learned a lot about what I need to do to get into colleges and how important some of the factors are."
Natalie - Abraham Lincoln "This health science expo showed me how many opportunities there are in the health care field. I learned a lot about college help and location, career options, and what health programs the colleges offer."

Lindsey - Harlan "I've learned a lot about the schools in Iowa/Nebraska, It was a very informational expo. I would definitely recommend this to any student interested in health care or not just because you learn so much it could really help kids determine if its right for them or not."
Nick - St. Albert "I learned that if you didn't do well in high school that you can start over in college. Also that you should try to apply to as many college scholarships as possible because you might get a few years of school paid for. I learned about the different schools around here that are good in the health care field, and you need to research more then just ask the college rep. if their class is good or not because if they have it then they will say it is good."
Jensen - East Mills "I enjoyed some of the speakers and really payed attention to what they said. I am currently undecided as to what I want to do with my future so listening to what those people had to say kind of helped steer me in the right direction."
Michelle - Abraham Lincoln "I learned a lot about the different colleges and a llot of different types of of jobs and areas."
Nekell - Missouri Valley "The speakers were great, but my favorite part was actually going around and talking to the people at the booths and talking to them one on one and finding out information more in depth then what they talked about in front of everyone."
Courtney - Shenandoah "I loved the speakers! I loved learning about the growth in health careers. I really enjoyed it. I loved seeing the academic programs at the local colleges."
Haley - Missouri Valley "I liked most making the video during the breaks, the UNO presentation, and the question/answer game at the end."

Allie - Missouri Valley "I liked the booths. The fact that they had all the information and made it possible to get more information if possible. I loved the American Medical Response with their ambulance. It reminded me how much I wanted to be in a health career and why."
Kayla - Abraham Lincoln "I liked that I was given the opportunity to get information about various colleges that I could attend when I get older."
Addie - Abraham Lincoln "I liked spending time with friends while learning. I liked talking to the college representatives and learning about their college."
Sara - Abraham Lincoln "The thing that I liked best about the expo was getting to hear from the colleges. The reason for this is because you do not always have time in your busy schedule to go and hear and see all the colleges you want to and being there gave me the opportunity to hear from Creighton and University of Nebraska Medical Center which I had not yet had time to visit."
Melissa - Tucker Center "In this expo I liked that the speakers gave out a lot of information on their colleges, they also had fliers. By these speakers coming and giving lots of info it really helped me on pursuing my career."
Carrie - Abraham Lincoln "I enjoyed the colleges being there and the prosthetic center giving a very interesting presentation! It was interesting to learn about."

Trevin - Thomas Jefferson "How there were a mixture of colleges and not just one. They gave a lot of needed information about their colleges and the best way to get in them."
Kendra - Abraham Lincoln "I liked that they gave us a lot of time to be able to talk to the colleges themselves. It was great to find out more about other colleges."
Kaysha - Harlan "There were alot of good speakers there who represented their professions well."
Jason - Abraham Lincoln "I really enjoyed having the paramedic from the American Medical Response ambulance service at the expo because that is one of the bigger careers that I myself am looking into. I also enjoyed having Mr. McGuire from the Advanced Prosthetics Center there because I know a little about that field due to the fact that I am required to wear leg braces due to my spinal bifida."

Brittany - Glenwood "Each college around this area, explained things thoroughly! It wasn't boring, I stayed interested the whole time I was there. I had fun meeting new people!"
